Riverton School
Riverton School is a contributing decile 2 state school with 196 pupils. It is situated in the coastal township of Riverton. Riverton has been an Enviroschool for one year and has been enthusiastic and fully involved.
The whole school has been involved in many projects through an Inquiry learning approach in the classrooms. The whole staff worked together in understanding the process of using Enviroschools as a context for learning; they introduced a several different operational practices and were fully involved in projects to benefit their local school area.
There were many amazing projects happening in the school.
As part of the practice of reducing waste in the school, one programme was a no-packaging day. This was held in conjunction with their school Pet Day and was very successful.
Another project was the redevelopment of an area for juniors outside their classroom. This was an area that was covered in, but was tired and not used by pupils. The children developed musical instruments that they could use outside made from recycled materials. As well as this, the area was repainted with a number of games that supported the Active Schools programmes.
They are working towards their Bronze Award which they hope to achieve in 2008.
A feature of the work done in this school was the “Mucking-In” day held to work on the projects. It seemed like the whole community was there. Grandparents came out from town to build the boxes to house the toys for the sandpit, large contractors dropped off recycled posts to use in build an area for growing fruit tress - to complement the Fruit in schools programme; games were painted on school walls and an old concrete area was repainted with tracks that pupils could use for skateboarding.
