The Invercargill Environment Centre - Te Whenua Awhi

The centre encourages and supports the people of Invercargill and surrounding areas to honour our responsibilities to, and relationship with the earth. It aims to be a one-stop-shop for environmental resources, a centre for the creative exchange of ideas between interested groups and individuals and to help people with an interest in the environment to connect with appropriate activities and groups.

The South Coast Environment Society

The SCES Society was formed in April 1996 to be an umbrella organisation for the environmental groups already operating in Riverton. The Society runs an Environment Centre that 10 local environmental groups use as a base and also manages several local projects. These projects include the Open Orchard, Heritage Harvest Festival and Eco Academy projects. The aims of the Society are to:

  • provide education about the Southern Coastal region's natural ecosystems
  • promote sustainable lifestyles and eco-friendly choices
  • display information on local environmental events and issues
  • provide a venue for a wide range of local environmental groups who promote, protect or educate

Transition Towns

Transition Towns is a grass roots/community initiative that involves creating a resilient, truly sustainable, vibrant community of happy and healthy people that will live in a way that will protect the environment and ultimately enhance the quality of human lives everywhere. The movement is gaining momentum internationally with about 1000 towns or cities worldwide (50 in New Zealand) joining the movement. The Invercargill branch of the movement aims to support the transition of Invercargill - and Southland - communities into a lower-energy, lower-emissions future.
