Environment Southland consists of the following departments, which carry out a multitude of functions that
enable us to assist the Southland community in managing its Environment.
24 Hour Emergency Response
Staff are on call to respond to environmental complaints and emergencies 24 hours a day.
Communication
Enables you to have access to timely and accurate information with the ability to have your say about our processes, so together we can make informed decisions about the environment.
Community Representation
Enables you to decide democratically the services you want and the environment you prefer within the limits and opportunities of the local resources and the law.
Consents Processing
Processes resource consents for activities that discharge contaminants to the environment, use of water, affect the beds of lakes and rivers or are in the coastal marine area.
Corporate Services
Provides services to general management, personnel, treasury, rating and computer information to Council.
Environmental Compliance
Responds to pollution complaints and monitors resource consent holders to ensure consent conditions are met.
Environmental Education
Aims to increase the public understanding and commitment to managing our environment sustainably.
Environmental Reporting
Monitors and gathers information about the state of our environment to enable it to be managed for future generations.
Hazard Management
Plans ahead to manage hazards including oil spills and provides advice and information on floods, coastal erosion and earthquakes.
Land Sustainability
Promotes best land use practices that will have the least effect on the environment while still maintaining productivity.
Pest Animal Management
Manages pest animals classified in the regional pest management strategy. From July 1st 2009, Environment Southland will not be carrying out a Bovine Tb control programme.
Pest Plant Management
Prevents the spread of invasive and exotic pest plants by education and enforcement of the regional pest management strategy.
Regional Planning
Consults with communities to prepare various regional plans to ensure that our resources are protected and enhanced for future generations.
River Management and Drainage
Prepares and implements programmes for construction and maintenance of works to enhance river stability, efficiency and to prevent drainage problems.
