The Local Body Elections will be held throughout New Zealand on Saturday, 9 October. Preliminary results will be available as soon as practicable after the close of voting.

Elections are being held to choose nine of the 12 elected representatives on Environment Southland's Council.

There will be elections in the Invercargill / Rakiura Constituency (6 vacancies), Eastern-Dome Constituency (2 vacancies) and the Hokonui Constituency (1 vacancy). No election is required in Fiordland, Western and Southern as only one nomination was received for each of these constituencies.

All elections will be held by postal ballot. Voting papers will be sent to all registered electors between 17-20 September. Papers must be returned by midday on 9 October.

Elections will be held for 12 Councillors. The Southland region is divided into six constituencies. They are:

Nomination Forms and Candidate Information Packs will be made available to the public upon Nominations being open, 23 July 2010.

Election Timetable:

July 21 : Public Notice of election, calling for nominations.

July 23 : Nominations open, roll open for inspection.

August 20 : Nominations close at noon, roll closes.

September 17 – 22 : Delivery of voting documents.

September 17 – October 9 : Progressive roll scrutiny, Special Voting period, Early Processing period.

By noon October 8 : Appointment of scrutineers.

October 9 : Election Day : Voting closes at noon and counting starts. Preliminary results available as soon as practicable after close of voting.

October 9 – 13 : Official Count.

October 13 - 20 : Declaration of results, Public Notice of results.
