Effluent Irrigation

Effluent guidelines

Environment Southland has a network of sites across Southland that measure soil moisture, rainfall and soil temperature.
This information is available so you can check the conditions in your area to help you decide whether to irrigate today.

Soils

The soil moisture map can be found by visiting this link.

You can also find out what type of soils you have on your property here.

Information on best practice for farm dairy effluent can be found here.

Why should I measure application depth?

You (as the consent holder) are required to ensure the effluent disposal system meets application depths and rates as stated in your resource consent.

Therefore, before you begin applying effluent under this consent, you must measure how your system is applying effluent. This process must be audited by an Environment Southland staff member, on behalf of the Compliance Manager. Costs including travel, officers' time, and paperwork associated with the measurement are recoverable by the monitoring condition in your resource consent.
