Pests
People often associate biosecurity with quarantine inspections and the detector dogs at airports. They are part of the biosecurity system, but it also involves a whole lot more. Biosecurity is about the protection of New Zealand's economy, environment and people's health and social and cultural wellbeing from pests and diseases. It includes trying to prevent new pests and diseases arriving, and eradicating or controlling those already present.
Environment Southland's Biosecurity division is responsible for pest management within the Southland region. We work with people to ensure pest plants and animals do not impact too severely on those values that give Southland a world class environment.
