State of Southland's Coastal Marine Environment
This is the internet based state of the environment report on the coastal marine environment of the Southland region. It measures the state of things as they are now, compared to the
way the Southland community would ideally like them to be. It also documents the pressures on this environment, and identifies ways the community and environmental management agencies
can respond positively to those pressures, to achieve the best result for our shared coastal marine environment.This report has been a collaborative effort involving a partnership between
Environment Southland, Department of Conservation, Invercargill City Council, Southland District Council and Te Ao Marama Inc. This collaboration will be ongoing process with benefits to
coastal marine management in Southland. The report was released 9 June 2005 and is available on the
State of Southland's Environment website. This website will be
regularly updated.
A printed summary (dated May 2005) is also available. It is 32 pages long, and includes summaries of each theme chapter as well as sections outlining how the report works and the main

Southland's State of the Environment Report for Water
Southland's first State of the Environment Report on the freshwater resources and ecosystems in Southland was released by Environment Southland on 25 October 2000. This document
essentially acts as a report card on the state of water resources in Southland. It looks at what is happening, why it is happening and what we are doing about it.

Water 2010
Southland's second State of the Environment Report on the state of freshwater resources and ecosystems
in Southland is due to be released by Environment Southland from 30 June 2010. This document looks at
what is happening, why it is happening and what we are doing about it in relation to Southland's
freshwater.
The report is being created and published at different stages;
- Our Health – June 2010;
- Our Needs – December 2010 (commercial, recreational, domestic, and customary)
- Our Ecosystem – May 2011 (flora and fauna that share water) and
- Our Threats – June 2011 (natural hazards)
Once published, the reports will be available in hardcopy from Environment Southland or you can
download them here.
