Minimising effluent spillage from stock trucks this winter

Southland agencies and organisations have come together to minimise effluent spillage from stock trucks this winter.

Because when it comes to keeping effluent off roads, the Southland local authorities, Fonterra, DairyNZ, Federated Farmers NZ, Southland, NZ Road Transport Association and NZ Transport Agency are in it together.

That's why they have a developed an education campaign about standing stock and on-farm effluent disposal. And that's why they have sent out factsheets and farmer profiles to all dairy farmers in Southland.

That's also why Environment Southland has negotiated agreements with seven transport operators to use their facilities in Lumsden, Mossburn, Centre Bush, Ryal Bush, Wairio, Edendale and Gore as temporary stock effluent disposal facilities over the winter.

At the same time, the dairy industry is investigating the use of portable tankers for effluent disposal in problem areas not covered by the temporary sites and the New Zealand Transport Agency is advancing a network of permanent sites with funding assistance from Environment Southland.
