Minimising effluent spillage from stock trucks this winter

Southland farmers, local authorities, Fonterra, DairyNZ, Federated Farmers NZ Southland, NZ Road Transport Association and the NZ Transport Agency are working together again this winter to minimise the effluent spilled on our roads.

The Standing Stock campaign is underway for another year. Before sending stock to winter grazing, farmers are encouraged to stand stock off green feed, feeding them only hay and straw, before transport. This reduces the amount of effluent deposited onto the truck during transport by up to two thirds.

Not only will it reduce the effluent that goes onto trucks and ends up on our roads, but it is better for the stock, making them more comfortable during the trip.

This winter, Environment Southland has agreements with eight transport operators to allow truckies to use their facilities as effluent disposal sites across Southland. This will mean cleaner roads and happier motorists.
