Getting around in Southland is generally quite simple, friendly and affordable. Your public transport options while in Southland include buses, taxis, trains, flights or ferries. Alternatively hire a rental car, motorbike or motorhome.
The coastline around Southland offers a road trip like nowhere else in New Zealand. Travellers can experience the hustle and bustle of city life in Invercargill, check out the wildlife and wild scenery along the Catlins or become immersed in the seclusion of Stewart Island.
Southland has an extensive network of roads. Some 2,500kms of sealed road, over 3,000kms of unsealed road as well as almost 800kms of footpaths are maintain by the three territorial authorities (Invercargill City, Southland District and Gore District Councils).
The State Highways are maintained by the New Zealand Transport Agency.
