On the Water
The Southland region overflows with lakes and rivers – with almost 200 lakes and around 40 rivers. Lake Hauroko in south western Southland was glacially formed and, at a depth of 462 metres, is the deepest lake in the country. Southland also has a number of smaller coastal lakes like Lake Vincent, Lake George, Forest Lake, The Reservoir, and Waituna Lagoon. Four major river catchments extend over Southland: the Waiau, Aparima, Oreti and Mataura.
Southland's lakes and rivers are extremely important to both locals and visitors alike for their recreational activities, from swimming and kayaking to fishing and boating.
Many Southlanders and visitors alike love the region for its fishing spots. Check in here from October to May to see if any of our River and Drainage works programmes will affect you fishing trip.
We monitor bathing water quality at both marine and freshwater bathing sites over summer each year. Find out the latest results here.
