Transitional Regional Plan

Purpose of the Plan

The Resource Management Act 1991 introduced a new regime for the management of the natural and physical resources of the Southland Region. As a part of the first step to the management of these resources the transitional provisions of the Act required the Southland Regional Council to prepare a Regional Plan incorporating a number of controls which were in effect prior to the Act coming into force. These controls are referred to as rules.

Different rules relate to different parts of the Southland Region depending upon the Catchment Board within which the area was located prior to local government re-organisation in 1989.

The Transitional Plan came into effect on 1 October 1991.
