A full review of the Operative Southland Regional Policy Statement (1997) began in 2008. The Proposed Southland Regional Policy Statement was publicly notified on 19 May 2012, submission close on the 18 July 2012.

The first Southland Regional Policy Statement (RPS) became operative in December 1997. This plan provides an overview of what the community expects Environment Southland to deliver, shaping the future direction of resource management in Southland.
