Regional Pest Management
The Regional Pest Management Strategy (RPMS) helps to manage pests on land, in freshwater and in the marine environment within Southland. The Strategy contains objectives and rules for managing plant, animal and marine pests within the region.
Purpose
The Strategy provides a framework for efficient and effective pest management, and aims to minimise adverse effects of pests on the environment and the community. If pest populations are left unchecked then they can increase to the point where they can cause major damage to our natural and physical resources.
A main focus of the Strategy is land occupier responsibility. This means that a land occupier is largely responsible for managing the pests that exist on that land. The land occupier must ensure that pests present on that land do not impact on any neighbour.
However, for Exclusion and Eradication pests (see sections 6 and 7 of the RPMS) Environment Southland will be responsible for work to eradicate them.
RPMS covers the entire Southland region.
Status
A review of the RPMS is currently underway.
This reviewed Strategy took effect on 1 September 2007 and will remain in force for five years from that date.
The Strategy may also be reviewed if Environment Southland believes it is failing to achieve its purpose, if there is a significant change in circumstances, or at the expiry of the Strategy.
The Strategy also ceases to have effect if Environment Southland declares, by public notice, that it has achieved its purpose.
