Waikaia Gold Ltd

Waikaia Gold Limited has applied for water permit, discharge permit and land use consent for the purpose of establishing a gold mining operation on the floodplain of the Waikaia River approximately 3 km downstream of the Waikaia township.

The application is to:
1. install an unlimited number of groundwater abstraction, monitoring and geological investigation wells for the purpose of defining mineral resources and dewatering mine cells;
2. abstract (non-consumptive) up to 29,549 m³/day (684,976 m³/month and 5,500,000 m³/year) of groundwater from the Wendon Groundwater Zone for temporary site dewatering and material processing to facilitate excavation activities;
3. discharge mine pond dewatering and stormwater to water, namely the Waikaia River and the Garvieburn, and to water via land;
4. disturb the bed of the Waikaia River and the Garvieburn to allow for placement and movement of pipes associated with authorised discharges to water;
5. discharge contaminants, namely dust, to air;
for an alluvial gold mining operation and associated activities.

The application was publicly notified on 22 June 2011 and 18 submissions were received.

A hearing will be heard jointly between Environment Southland and the Southland District Council.

The hearing is scheduled to commence at 09:00a.m. 28 November 2011 in the Council Chambers, Environment Southland, corner of Price Street and North Road, Waikiwi, Invercargill.
