When received, all reported incidents are prioritised based on the potential impact to the environment.
This prioritisation may mean that the response is either immediate, or in the next few days.
It is hugely important that incidents are reported as soon as they are found, to help us respond appropriately and to ensure the minimum environmental impact.
Environment Southland will respond to all reported incidents. Some of these responses will involve staff and site visits.
High priority incidents are likely to be followed up immediately (including outside normal office hours).
When reporting incidents the following information will assist us in our investigation:
- full details of the incident
- estimated extent of the effect
- type of contaminant
- affected people, waterways or properties
- duration and time of incident
- the location and responsible party
- names & contacts
- addresses including details such as rapid numbers, license plate number, dairy supply numbers, boatshed numbers etc and closest township
