Winner - Barry Harcourt
Capturing the environment in images
Even before he began his 30-year-plus career as a news photographer, Barry Harcourt had a special passion for photographing birds and the environment – he learned from some of our most renowned ornithologists and has always been willing to spend hours sitting in a self-built hide, waiting for the perfect shot. A succession of editors has recognised the value of Barry’s bird photographs, and published them. In this way, Barry has helped educate Southlanders about the environment and raised the profile of some of our rarest species. Now Barry has retired to Te Anau he gives his time and skill freely to DOC and the Fiordland Conservation Trust, and his beautiful images are still educating Southlanders about our natural environment.
