Boat owners are being warned to check their moorings are secure, as strong winds continue to batter the Southland coast.

Regional Harbourmaster Kevin O’Sullivan said that he had received three reports of problems with moorings at Bluff this morning.
“Anyone with a mooring should go and check that it is secure,” he said.

Metservice has issued a gale warning for Southland, forecasting westerly gales gusting 130 km/h in exposed places until 9pm Friday. Winds are predicted to ease overnight.

Emergency Management Southland Manager Neil Cruickshank said there had been no reports of significant problems caused by the gale so far but urged householders to check their properties for loose items that could blow away or cause damage if they became airborne in the wind. This included wheelie bins and trampolines, he said.

Motorists and motorcyclists are advised to drive to the conditions.
