Water levels monitored as fine spell continues

River levels around Southland are dropping as fine weather continues, and Environment Southland is cautioning consent holders that around New Year’s Day some are likely to reach trigger levels requiring them to cease their water takes.

Senior Technical Officer Graeme McKenzie said there were no restrictions at present.

Consent holders automatically receive an e-mail from the Council when river levels reach the levels that require them to cease taking water. This particularly applies to irrigators and industries. Mr McKenzie said it would be prudent for consent holders to monitor their e-mails during the Christmas – New Year period.

Environment Southland staff will on duty throughout the holidays to monitor conditions in the region’s rivers and aquifers.

Aside from isolated showers overnight and light rain on Tuesday, Met Service is not predicting rain for Southland in the next week.
