Flood warning in place for Waikaia area

Rain has fallen steadily across Southland today, with northern parts of the region being particularly affected.
The Waikaia catchment has had 76mm of rain today in the headwaters at Hyde Rock. This has caused the Waikaia River to rise quickly, peaking at Piano Flat at 2.1 metres above normal at midday.It is expected to peak at the Waikaia township at about 2.3 metres above normal at around 6pm tonight.
Other rivers have been less affected at this stage but rain is continuing to fall around the region. Environment Southland is monitoring the situation.
