Environment Southland carries out a multitude of functions that enables us to assist the Southland community in managing the environment.

24-hour Pollution response hotline

Staff are on call to respond to environmental complaints and emergencies 24 hours a day.

Communication

Our Communication team works to ensure timely and accurate information with the ability to have your say about our processes, so together we can make informed decisions about the environment.

Consents processing

Resource consents are processed for activities that discharge contaminants to the environment, use of water, affect the beds of lakes and rivers or are in the coastal marine area.

Corporate services

Provides services to general management, personnel, treasury, rating and computer information to Council.

Environmental compliance

Responds to pollution complaints and monitors resource consent holders to ensure consent conditions are met.

Environmental education

Aims to increase the public understanding and commitment to managing our environment sustainably.

Environmental information

Monitors and gathers information about the state of our environment to enable it to be managed for future generations.

Hazard management

Plans ahead to manage hazards including oil spills and provides advice and information on floods, coastal erosion and earthquakes.

Land sustainability

Promotes good land use practices that will have the least effect on the environment while still maintaining productivity.

Plant and animal pests

Manages pest animals and plants which are classified in the regional pest management strategy.

Policy and planning

Consults with communities to prepare various regional plans to ensure that our resources are protected and enhanced for future generations.

River and drainage Management

Prepares and implements programmes for construction and maintenance of works to enhance river stability, efficiency and to prevent drainage problems.
