Make Your Voice Count in the 2025 Local Elections
Local elections are your chance to help shape the future of Southland. By casting your vote in the 2025 Environment Southland elections, you're choosing who will represent you and make decisions that affect our environment, communities and long-term direction.
This year, elections will be held in the Hokonui and Invercargill-Rakiura constituencies.
Elections are not required to be held in constituencies where the number of candidates is equal to the number of vacancies.
Councillors play a vital role in guiding how we care for our land and water, manage natural hazards, plan for climate change and invest in the region's future.
Voting is easy and powerful.
Voting papers will be delivered via mail from 9 September and must be returned by 12 noon on Saturday 11 October. If you’re enrolled by 15 August, you’ll receive your voting pack in the mail.
Take a few minutes to learn about the candidates and make your choice. The decisions made around the council table influence the things that matter most. From flood protection and water quality to land use and sustainable development.
By voting, you're helping ensure Southland continues to be a thriving, resilient place for future generations.
Get enrolled
The Electoral Commission manages voter enrolments and will send everyone a letter to confirm their enrolment details in an election year.
If you’re unsure whether you're enrolled - especially if you've recently turned 18, become a New Zealand resident, or changed address - it’s a good idea to check your enrolment to make sure you're ready to vote.
