Environment Southland launches new mapping platform

Environment Southland has launched SouthMaps – a new online mapping platform that brings together public information from all four Southland councils and Great South into one easy-to-use digital hub.

Whether you're looking up property details or environmental data, planning a development, or simply checking your rubbish day, SouthMaps puts accurate, up-to-date information at your fingertips.

Environment Southland information and technology services manager Jane Carroll said SouthMaps is a fantastic tool that gives our customers better access to useful information.

“By combining key data from across the region, we’ve given Southlanders a one-stop-shop for everything from property information to environmental planning. It’s a huge step forward in making council data more accessible and useful for our communities.”

Built using advanced GIS (Geographic Information System) technology, SouthMaps is a significant upgrade from Beacon, Environment Southland’s previous mapping system. It offers improved functionality, greater accuracy, and a more intuitive user experience.

“SouthMaps helps people make smarter, more informed decisions,” Jane Carroll said. “By improving access to spatial data and making it easier to use, we’re helping communities harness the power of location-based insights—and we’re excited to keep building on this foundation.”

What’s new in SouthMaps?

SouthMaps includes a range of new and improved features designed to make accessing local information easier than ever:

• An updated and improved property search – no matter where you live in Southland, you can look up relevant property information in one place. Rates, school zones and more.
• A collated Southland Cemetery Search – that includes burials in Gore, Invercargill and other Southland cemeteries.
• A utilities map that provides a single, simplified view of where pipes run for existing and prospective homeowners across all councils.
• Recycling and rubbish – how best to put waste in its place, wherever you might be in the region.

SouthMaps has been developed by Environment Southland with the support of Southland and Gore District and Invercargill City Councils, and Great South through a shared services project.
