River liaison committees
Environment Southland has established eight River Liaison Committees comprised of representatives evenly spread throughout each river catchment and elected annually by their communities.
Their role is to advise and assist Council in the development of annual maintenance works programmes and budgets, and provide an important local contact for each river community regarding special river and land drainage management issues.
The original Terms of Reference for River Liaison Committees was developed in 1979 in conjunction with Federated Farmers and the various River Liaison Committees. The Capacity Building Project was initiated to respond to a need and desire by River Liaison Committees and Environment Southland to consider a range of emerging issues in Southland where river management, water quality and soil conservation are closely linked. Expanding the River Liaison Committees scope will provide them with the opportunity to include biodiversity, cultural values, water quality, ecological health and soil health to complement river works, flood and river erosion control services. Increasing scope and flexibility of these committees ensures their longevity and the valuable advice they provide Council.
