Nominations now open for 2025 Environment Southland Community Awards
Deserved recognition awaits Murihiku Southland’s environmental innovators and achievers with nominations for the 2025 Environment Southland Community Awards opening this week.
The awards provide an important platform to celebrate the outstanding mahi of those who strive to protect and improve our region’s environment, ensuring their stories of success can be told.
“Southlanders are typically humble and there are so many people quietly undertaking great mahi that makes a real difference for future generations,” Chairman Nicol Horrell said.
“These members of our community inspire others with their dedication, innovation and collaborative work, demonstrating that we can all contribute to protecting and enhancing our region.”
The Environment Southland Community Awards provide a wide range of opportunities for Southlanders to be recognised through its eight award categories which include farming, community, biodiversity and biosecurity, education, business,
wetlands and waterways and individual awards.
A new category has been introduced this year, the Emerging Environmental Initiative award recognises environmental projects and actions in their early stages that have the potential to make a real difference in Murihiku Southland.
All entries must be either located in Southland, have been developed in Southland or be of demonstrated benefit to the region.
“If you know of a project or person that deserves to be nominated for environmental work they are undertaking, put their name forward,” Chairman Nicol Horrell said.
“It is not the Southland way to skite about our achievements, so friends, colleagues and family are encouraged to nominate on behalf of those who deserve to be recognised.”
Finalists will be selected after nominations close on 30 June, with the 2025 winners to be announced at an awards dinner to be held in Invercargill on 3 October.
