Response to the Local Government Commission

Environment Southland has made its response to the Local Government Commission (LGC) publicly available.

The letter was sent to the LGC following a request to Southland councils to confirm whether they support it investigating governance arrangements for the region.

Environment Southland confirmed its support for an investigation into the options for reorganising Southland’s local councils.

As well as the response letter, a report commissioned by the council was also provided to the LGC. In late 2024, Environment Southland commissioned an independent report by TBD Ltd to review the high-level options for integrated activities and services with other councils that could deliver the best value for Southland ratepayers. This report supported initial discussions within our own council.
