Environment Southland encourages community-minded candidates to stand

Environment Southland is encouraging Southlanders with a passion for the region to consider standing for Council in this year’s local government elections.

Environment Southland deputy electoral officer Paula Burke said it was an opportunity to play an active role in shaping Southland’s future.

“Standing for regional council is a chance to support your community while making decisions that benefit the entire region,” she said.

“It’s also a valuable opportunity to grow your leadership and governance skills.”

The Southland Regional Council (Environment Southland) is made up of 12 councillors representing six constituencies: Invercargill-Rakiura (6), Eastern-Dome (2), Fiordland (1), Hokonui (1), Southern (1) and Western (1).

At the time of release, no nominations have been received for the Southern constituency and only three have been received for Invercargill.

“Councillors have the responsibility of guiding key issues such as natural resource management, climate resilience, freshwater quality, biosecurity and community wellbeing, Paula Burke said.

“These are big issues that require strong local voices. We want to hear from people who are committed to the future of Murihiku and who can bring a diverse range of views to the Council table.”

To be eligible, candidates must be New Zealand citizens, aged over 18, and enrolled to vote.

Nominations close this week at 12 noon on Friday, 1 August. More information, including nomination forms and the candidate handbook, is available at www.es.govt.nz/elections
