Our Changing Climate – Community Survey 2025

We’re keen to get your thoughts on our changing climate.

Environment Southland General Manager Community and Engagement Sam Rossiter-Stead said councils in Murihiku Southland were working collaboratively with mana whenua to develop a regional response to our changing climate.

The survey is open to anyone in the region to take part in, and everyone is encouraged to have their say on what is one of the biggest environmental challenges our communities face.

“It covers awareness, knowledge and perceptions of how the changing climate is affecting people and their communities in Murihiku Southland – plus impacts, preparedness, actions and barriers, and how people can be better informed about the issues.”

Murihiku Southland impacts are predicted to include an increase in the frequency of severe weather, and the size and duration of unprecedented weather events. Coastal flooding will also increase steadily. Wind speeds and the number of windy days are also expected to increase.

The survey findings will continue to help shape the development and implementation of regional, city and district work programmes.

The 2025 survey will be the second time people in the region have been asked for their thoughts on our changing climate, with the previous survey done in 2023, when 505 people responded.

The Regional Climate Change Strategy for Murihiku Southland was adopted in October 2024, and the Regional Framework for Action on Climate in 2025. This framework outlines priority actions, including emissions reduction, climate adaptation, and financial planning to support Southlanders in adjusting to climate challenges.

The survey takes 5-10 minutes to complete. Responses are confidential. It is open till 27 November.
