Celebrating Murihiku Southland's Environmental Champions
From protecting critically endangered species and tackling wilding pines to growing food for local communities, some of Murihiku Southland's most inspiring environmental champions were recognised at the Environment Southland Community Awards on Thursday. (Oct 22)
Now in its 30th year, the awards celebrate the remarkable individuals, schools, businesses, farmers and community organisations whose passion, commitment and innovation are helping to protect, restore and enhance the natural environment for the benefit of their communities and future generations.
Environment Southland councillors and awards judges Maurice Rodway and Ewen Mathieson said the standard of the entries was once again incredibly high, and they all deserved recognition for their outstanding environmental mahi.
“These awards recognise people who quietly get on with the job of caring for the environment. The commitment, energy and perseverance shown by this year's winners was truly impressive,” Councillor Maurice Rodway said.
"Whether they were restoring habitats, protecting wildlife or bringing communities together through environmental projects, every nominee was making a real difference.
"Their ability to inspire others and build support for environmental action is a key part of their success.”
Councillor Ewen Mathieson said Murihiku Southland is fortunate to have people who care so deeply about the places they live.
"They don't do this work for awards or recognition. But it's important we take the time to acknowledge and celebrate the people who are making a positive difference to our environment and our communities."
Fisherman, conservationist and community leader Pete Young was honoured for his dedicated service to the preservation and protection of the Fiordland marine area over the past 30 years with the Kaitiaki Tohu Pou Award. The Kaitiaki Tohu Pou Award is not presented each year. It is reserved for those who have shown outstanding dedication to preserving and enhancing Southland’s environment.
For the first time, Te Tohu Kahika o te Taiao Award was included in this year’s Awards ceremony. The name of the award draws on the kahikatea tree, traditionally seen as an anchoring pillar in the environment. Its strength comes not only from the tree itself, but from its network of roots, providing enduring support and protection to those around it.
Te Tohu Kahika o te Taiao Award was awarded to Jenny Campbell, who has supported, encouraged and championed people involved in environmental projects across Murihiku Southland for many years, making sure their mahi and stories are recognised through these Awards.
Mid Dome Wilding Trees Charitable Trust earned the 2026 Councillors’ Award, which recognises the exceptional mahi of a finalist from any award category. The award acknowledges the trust’s efforts to protect northern Southland’s high country from the spread of wilding pines.
