Looking after your Key Native Ecosystems
Properties throughout Southland contain a vast array of wetlands, forest and native species, but many of us do not know much about them.
To help turn this around, Environment Southland runs the Key Native Ecosystems programme, where we work with you as a landowner and other key stakeholders to protect, enhance and restore the indigenous biodiversity values of your area.
A Key Native Ecosystem is an area identified by Environment Southland for its high indigenous biodiversity values, meaning the area contains important ecosystems, species, and habitats.
We can help you with advice and funding on:
- Legal protection
- Weed control
- Fencing
- Restoration planting
- Pest control establishment
- Accessing additional funding for biodiversity outcomes
Being part of this programme means you will work with our Biodiversity Officers to develop a biodiversity plan to assist in identifying your aspirations for your site, as well as the potential and existing threats.
The plan outlines a work programme designed to address these threats, followed by a recommended maintenance schedule.
