Use the Southland Natural Hazards Portal for local, address-level information to support planning, consenting and other property-specific decisions.

The Southland Natural Hazards Portal provides local information on natural hazards to help with property research, planning and general awareness. Search an address to see mapping for flooding (including historic flood photos), coastal hazards (e.g., tsunami), and selected earthquake-related hazards—such as liquefaction susceptibility and, where available, ground-shaking and fault information from national datasets. The portal is self-service and most requests can be completed online; if you need more detail, you can submit an enquiry form within the portal.

How this relates to the new National Flood Tool

Earth Sciences New Zealand’s National Flood Tool gives a national-scale overview of flooding from one-in-100-year (1% AEP) rainfall, shown for the current climate and +1, +2 and +3 °C warming scenarios. It is zoomable to street level (not property level) and links to council maps where available. Use the National Flood Tool for a high-level, country-wide picture and broad screening.
