Certification and auditing
Farm plan certifiers work alongside farm operators to assess whether a freshwater farm plan meets regulatory requirements and therefore is able to be certified.
Farm plans can be developed by anyone but must be certified by an appointed certifier. The certifier is responsible for:
- working with the farm operator to administer the certification process
- assessing and documenting whether a freshwater farm plan meets certification requirements (is fit for purpose)
- reporting certification information to the relevant council.
Certifiers may come from a range of backgrounds provided they have the necessary skills and experience set out in the regulations. Certifiers must complete national and regional training before being appointed by the regional council.

Government owned assurance scheme provider AssureQuality provides national Farm Plan certifier and auditor training. If you’re interested in becoming a farm plan certifier or auditor, please visit www.farmplancertifiers.nz.
In order to work as a certifier or auditor in Murihiku Southland, you’ll also need to complete regional training to build and demonstrate your understanding of the key issues in our region.
